Hague FAQ for New Adoptive Families

History

This is a new program for Buckner and Dillon International.  Buckner Adoption And Maternity Services is the licensed entity in Honduras.  Buckner received its non-expiring license in 2009 to place children from Honduras.

[up]

Family Requirements
  • Heterosexual married couples only between the ages of 25 - 50 years old are eligible to adopt.  There should be a minimum of 15 years age difference between the parents' age and the age of the child whom they are adopting.

  • Couples must have been married a minimum of 3 years.  Second marriages must be a minimum of 3 years.

  • Spouses with more than one previous marriage will need to receive agency approval in order to adopt from Honduras

  • No more than 15 years age difference between husband and wife

  • Families may not have more than 3 children under the age of 18 already living in their home to be able to adopt

  • Preference is given to Christian families to adopt from this program

  • U.S. citizens in all 50 states are eligible to adopt from this program.

[up]

About the Children
  • Children come into orphanage care predominantly because of parental abandonment, abuse or neglect

  • Children may be between 6 months  - 14 years old at the time of arrival in the U.S.

  • Boys and girls are available for adoption

  • Older children are also available for adoption including sibling groups

  • Limited medical information is available on the children, therefore the health status of each child will vary.

  • Children are of Spanish and/or Indian descent

[up]

Adoption Process

  • Families need to complete a psychological evaluation prior to completion of their home study

  • Families complete a home study before submitting their authenticated dossier to Dillon International

  • There is an urgent need for families open to adopting a child over 3 years of age:

    • Families will wait approximately 2 - 4 years for a referral of a child less than 4years old after their dossier is submitted

    • Families will wait approximately 8 months - 24 months for a referral of a child older than 4years old after their dossier is submitted

  • Both spouses must travel to Honduras to receive their child and will make 2 trips to complete their child's adoption in the Honduran court system

  • Families will make their first trip to meet their child 1-2 weeks after accepting the assignment of their child.  Families will stay in Honduras 4-6 days to get to know their child and to be interviewed by a social worker and a psychologist in Honduras

  • Families will then wait an additional 2-3 months after their first trip to Honduras to receive their child's legal documents, which will allow the family to travel to receive their child and complete the adoption process  The second trip to Honduras will last approximately 4-6 weeks to finalize their child's adoption.  Although both spouses must travel for both trips, one parent may return to the U.S., if necessary, after the adoption decree has been signed during the second trip to Honduras.

  • Families will be escorted by in-country, bi-lingual adoption staff while in Honduras each time.

  • Families will re-finalize the child's adoption in the U.S. after completing 3 post-placement visits with the family's caseworker

SPECIAL NOTE on US Citizenship:  Since both parents travel to receive their child and complete the adoption in Honduras, the child will be considered a U.S. citizen upon entering the United States.

Post-Adoption Services

  • Dillon International believes that post-adoption support fosters an overall positive adoption experience for both adoptee and adoptive family

  • Our long-term experience has shown us that adoptees develop a better sense of identity, purpose, and boost in their self-confidence from an understanding and appreciation of their birth heritage

  • The agency provides a variety of activities and events to allow an adoptee and his/her family to celebrate his/her birth heritage

  • For more information on specific heritage events, visit the post-adoption section of Dillon's website
